Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren, one of those books that has been in your TBR shelf for the longest time and when you finally read it, you want to smack yourself in the head with it for taking so long to pick it up. I'll never forget when I was younger, after watching the movie A Walk to Remember, I had told my mother to watch it and after she did she came and asked if I knew of other movies that "make you feel like this". I needed elaboration so she just sighed with a smile on her face and she didn't need to say more, I understood what she meant. After reading this book I felt the exact same way.
I was hooked pretty early on and as I went on reading I was just waiting to be shattered, something told me that this going back and forth from THEN to NOW and so on was going to bring a major heartbreak at some point. I was thinking there was going to be some plot twist that was going to make me throw the book across the room and enter a God knows how long reading slump. To be honest I just didn't want that at the moment. Thankfully the book turned out to be what I needed and more.
Macy's and Elliot's story I think is one that everybody at one point or another during our younger years dreamed of, but without the tragedy part. Like I mentioned before, the book is told in alternating timelines. We get to see their story from young tweens to adults and all that happened that led them to be apart for more than a decade. In any point in time you can always see that no matter what had happened they were each other's person, soulmates. Is really hard to discuss the book without a bunch of spoilers because I just loved it so much I really really want to talk about it but at the same time I don't want to ruin it for you.
When we first meet Macy she is living the life she wanted (or so she thought), she is successful and dedicated to her career, engaged to a single father who understands the demands of her career and is fine with the routine and the sort of safe, eventless life they have build. This changes when Elliot comes back into her life after eleven years apart. The past starts to bring emotions forward that Macy had long ago buried deep inside, the present brings Macy emotions she no longer thought she needed or wanted, all because of Elliot, who after eleven years had yet to give up on her and was determined to understand how the love of his life went and disappeared on him out of the blue. Something or somethings happened in the past that broke their fairytale romance, what was supposed to be their happily ever after, but Macy left before a word could be exchanged, before giving Elliot a chance, now eleven years later Elliot is determined to find out why she left and is also faced with the reality of the hard truth while remaining determined to make her see that they belong to one and another.
I strongly suggest you give this book a chance if you haven't already, like I said before, it is everything you never knew you needed. Also this is my first read from this duo of writers, yes there is two, Christina and Lauren, and I have three others in my TBR shelf so I will get to them soon so I won't regret waiting so long like it happened with this one.
