For someone like me who mostly reads fantasy romance and heartbreaking romance books, this one was a breath of fresh air and one with a lot of unexpectedness, if that’s even a word. Truth be told I have never read a book like this one or a crime/suspense book in my life. Yet this book it’s also a lot more than just crime and suspense, it’s also funny and heart warming. I am probably making no sense but I’m pretty sure if you take the time to read it you will be just as surprised as I was.
I received the book from it’s author Dime Sheppard a couple of months ago and started it immediately. It just happened to arrive just in time for a nice three day long blackout that affected Puerto Rico, my home country, leaving me with a lot of free time, which was a plus because I am a slow reader. At first I was a bit lost and started to build questions in my mind from the get go, this led to becoming more and more curious as I read through it. At some points I tried to guess what was going to happen, which is something I do with all the books I read. I must admit I lost all my guesses with this one. Not only was this book a rollercoaster of different thoughts and emotions, it was exceptionally well written and don’t even get me started on how beautiful the paperback itself is. THIS BOOK IS GORGEOUS!
Let’s get to the good stuff and tell you a little synopsis without giving away too much so I don’t ruin the experience for you.
Our main character in this story is Evie Howland, a successful writer of a crime series for which she is in the process of writing the series sixteenth book. At the same time she is in the process of planning her wedding to boyfriend, Daniel. You could say one part of her life is moving forward while the other, the one where she must write this book sooner rather than later, is getting a little stuck and begins to unravel her life as a whole when the unexpected happens.
HER CHARACTERS START COMING TO LIFE. Even worse? A homicide that she is well to familiar with because, well she wrote it, happens in real life. The story now takes a rollercoaster ride filled with ups and downs, “What did I just read” moments, tension and fast paced fun. Evie’s book characters are far from dull and some are a bit scary, having them now in the real world is quite the problem. Her two main characters, NYPD detective Carolyn Harding has some life problems in Evie's story, having her also come to life brings quite the hassle since she’s become a little volatile and Detective Jay Ryan, he brings his “I’m tired of being fiction” vibe but, he comes to bring or help Evie realize a lot about life, specifically of how she’s living it. Did I picture actor Jay Ryan from the tv series The beauty and the beast as Detective Jay Ryan?? Yes, yes I did!!! How could I not.
In the course of the story Evie has to step out of what could be described as comfort zones, start to see her world different and face some facts when it comes to her two worlds, the real one and the fictional one. While she is faced with unlikely challenges, she must pull through, open her eyes and see the world differently.
The fact that the author was able to put crime, suspense, humor, romance and fiction all together and deliver this thrilling story so perfectly is beyond words. Also, this is a debut novel, how amazing is that.
